A
School Designed for Boys
The belief in single gender education underpins the philosophy of Berwick
Grammar School, allowing for the design of programs and activities to reflect
all that we now know about boys' developmental needs and learning styles.
Adolescent boys and girls are very different and their needs are specific
in terms of their learning. We strongly believe that boys can be best catered
for in an all boys' school.
Enjoying
the Challenge of Leadership
A good leader knows that before you can lead others you must first lead
yourself. A BGS boy will investigate the qualities that contribute to
leadership: an open mind, a sense of responsibility, strong decision-making,
courage, empathy, resilience and respect. Through specially designed programs,
through example and direct experience, boys will explore the concepts
of leadership as it relates to themselves and to others.
All Outdoor
Education activities will be underpinned by the BGS Leadership Program
that promotes challenge, teamwork and success. An appreciation of the
natural environment will be nurtured alongside the development of practical
and co-operative skills.
Dedicated
Staff - Role Models for the Future
The teachers of Berwick Grammar will be chosen for their expertise and
commitment towards teaching boys. Both male and female staff will be well-qualified
in their field(s) and share a strong understanding of how to motivate
boys to participate fully in the learning programs provided. Teachers
who inspire and encourage their students provide great role models for
the future.
Academic
excellence is a key goal in BGS' inquiry based curriculum and there is
a high expectation for students to aim for success. There is, however,
a balance between academic rigor and the need to support each student's
personal and social development. Confidence and self-esteem influence
significantly a student's ability to achieve and so are central to our
pastoral program.
Question,
Explore, Discover
Through a range of innovative programs, students will be encouraged to
learn in a variety of contexts. An extensive Arts Program will explore
creative expression through music, dramatic and fine arts, whilst technology
studies will engage boys with hands-on tasks such as woodwork and electronic
circuitry.
Technology
is a strong feature of the curriculum at every level. All students use
their own notebook computer as a learning tool in all subject areas. The
wireless based intranet supports learning both at school and at home.
The School's
co-curricular program includes an extensive sporting component that provides
both House sport and inter-school sporting opportunities. On campus facilities
will include a gymnasium and basketball/tennis courts as well as an oval.
Participation in such activities as the Human Powered Vehicle program
will further enrich student experience.
A Quest
for Life
At Berwick Grammar we believe that a good education is about developing
character as well as intellect. With integrity and commitment, young men
can confidently follow the path of their choosing towards a balanced life
and satisfying career.
Of course,
such success is not achieved by the School alone. At Berwick Grammar we
will work in partnership with every family to encourage each student to
focus on achieving his personal best in all he does.
